ELIMINATING HIGH ENERGY BILLS
2nd Dec 2014
Whether you are an individual homeowner, renting an apartment or running a business, we all know that the cost of heating or cooling rooms can be quite costly. Energy prices have risen steadily over the past several years, and everyone is looking for ways to cut as many costs as possible. When it comes to energy usage, some are turning to extreme measures to save money; but the reality is that everything does not have to be extreme. Take a look at some of these simple and cost-effective steps you can take!
Check for air leaks
You may think your business or personal property is shut up tight against everything possible, but think again! If there are open seals and cracks in various parts of the walls, ceilings and doors, you could be allowing hot or cold air to enter the home. This makes the efficiency of heating or cooling a room that much more difficult, so take the time to check for air leaks, and fix them as necessary; you may need to caulk a window, or add material to the bottom of a door to reduce airflow, but it will be undoubtedly worth it in the long run.
Unplug electronic devices
Many individuals do not realize that even when a device is turned off, if it is still plugged in it uses something called "phantom power". The plug still draws a low amount of voltage, and if you have several larger devices plugged in continuously, it can become the equivalent of leaving a 75-watt light bulb on at all times. Unplug your electronics when not in use!
Be efficient with appliance usage
We all want to crank up the heat in the winter, but moderate use will be far easier on the wallet. If you can deal with putting the heat on during the morning and the evening, dressing in warmer clothes could be a great substitute. Warm yourself up by drinking hot tea or coffee, as well as exercising. There are fantastic units available, such as Samsung ductless mini split air conditioners and heaters, but even with highly-efficient ones, you can still save quite a bit of money by monitoring their use.
Take these tips into account daily, and you will undoubtedly see an impact on your electric or gas bill the next time it comes around; energy efficiency is not just about quality products, but about making the proper choices.
